DALLAS -- The Dallas Stars used a strong power play to stay in the Western Conference playoff chase on Monday night. Ray Whitney and Tyler Seguin scored with a man advantage and Dallas held off the Winnipeg Jets 2-1. "Power plays for us won it, and the power play for them got them back into it," Whitney said. The victory allowed Dallas to move within a point of the Phoenix Coyotes for the Western Conferences final playoff spot. The Stars have missed the playoffs in each of the past five seasons. Kari Lehtonen, whose 32 saves for Dallas included 14 in the third period, didnt give up a goal until the Jets Bryan Little scored with 2:44 remaining. Winnipeg had a 4-on-3 power play, and added a fifth skater by pulling goalie Al Montoya. "Special teams won the game, and the goalie made saves when he needed to," Stars coach Lindy Ruff said. "Kari was excellent. His saves were great, and his puck handling really helped us. He made some good passes." Stars captain Jamie Benn assisted on both goals. The Jets continued to fade in the post-season race. "It is (tough to make a playoff push like this)," Winnipeg coach Paul Maurice said. "The final results havent been good enough for our team. Were just getting closer to it. Were not there." The Jets are 2-6-3 in their past 11 games. One of the victories was a 7-2 rout of visiting Dallas eight days earlier. Ruff said he did not use that game as motivation. "I didnt even talk about last week. We had a tough night in goal, and when you start chasing the game, it can get ugly." Dallas defence has allowed only two goals in the past two games after giving up 16 in the previous three, all losses. Ruff said: "I think weve cleaned up the individual mistakes." The Stars have 79 points. Phoenix received a point for an overtime loss against the Rangers to reach 80. Whitney said that the team did some scoreboard watching. "We all look up to see the out-of-town scores. Everybody these last three weeks will be doing that." He scored 5:32 into the game from the left faceoff circle on a slap shot that went off Montoya and into the upper left corner. Late in the period, Dallas Valeri Nichushkin beat two defenders for a breakaway on the power play. Montoya, who finished with 25 saves, stopped the rookies backhand shot. Winnipegs best chances came midway through the first, but Lehtonen stopped Blake Wheeler in close and saved Jim Slaters wraparound attempt. The Stars finished the period with a 12-11 edge in shots, and a 1-0 lead. Just 13 seconds into Dallas third power play, Tyler Seguin pulled the puck out of a pile in front and lifted a shot over Montoya at 16:09 of the second. Seguins 32nd goal was his sixth in five games against Winnipeg this season. His 10 points against the Jets are his highest total against any opponent. Winnipeg nearly scored on its first power play of the game. With two minutes remaining in the second, Lehtonen reached back to smother the puck after a shot from the blue line bounced off the crossbar. Defence dominated in a period when the Stars outshot the Jets 9-7. Winnipeg spent much of the third period in the Dallas end, peppering Lehtonen with 15 shots, but fell a goal short. "I thought we battled hard to try and get back in the game for the most part, especially the third," Little said. "We never really gave up and we made a push kind of like we did last game and just like last game, we came one short again." Whitney said: "I thought in the third we kind of sat back a little bit and played prevent D. When the situation tightens these last 11 games, youre going to see more of that." NOTES: Jets captain Andrew Ladd missed the game because his wife, Brandi, gave birth to a baby girl Sunday. He is expected to rejoin the team Thursday at San Jose for the second game of a five-game trip. Evander Kane joined Little and Michael Frolik on the first line. ... Goalie Ondrej Pavelec missed his fifth consecutive game because of an upper body injury. Wheeler left the ice in the third period after skating into an open door by the Dallas bench. He later rejoined his teammates on Winnipegs bench. . Sergei Gonchars first-period assist was his eighth in the past six games against the Jets. ... Benn has 15 points (seven goals, eight assists) in his past 11 games. ... The Stars last game with more than one power-play goal was March 6. ... Ruff said Erik Cole, who has missed the past two games because of an upper-body injury, would not accompany the team to Chicago for Tuesdays game against the Blackhawks. Week four produced the first tie of the 2016 season, not in the NFL but in the predictor league! Going up against Oakland Raiders fan Nick Easey, Richard produced an 8-7 record which was matched by Nick! That takes him to 1-2-1 for the season so far. Its a new week in the NFL and Richard now has work to do as he looks to level his record against Minnesota Vikings fan Dave Thropp, who runs the Twitter account @UK_Vikings. Richards 2016 Results Richard UK Fan Base Season Record v Jaguars 10-6 11-5 0-1 v Bengals 10-6 7-9 1-1 v Redskins 5-11 9-7 1-2 v Raiders 8-7 8-7 1-2-1 Arizona Cardinals @ San Francisco 49ers (Friday, 12:30am Sky Sports 1) Richard: While the 49ers were expected to struggle this season, no one was predicting the Cardinals would hold the same 1-3 record coming into this Week 5 clash. Arizona have already lost two games at home and their offence hasnt got going. Should quarterback Carson Palmer fail the NFLs concussion protocol then Drew Stanton will start on Thursday night. This has to be frustrating for a Cardinals defence which is tied for third with nine takeaways, has 11 sacks and ranks ninth overall. Quarterback Carson Palmer suffered a concussion in Week 4 and was still in concussion protocol on Tuesday San Francisco lost linebacker Navarro Bowman to an Achilles injury on Sunday and it showed as the Dallas Cowboys ran the ball at will. A team struggling to mount anything on offence now appears to have lost the heart of their defence as well. The 49ers will need to establish their run game to have a realistic chance of victory but Arizona should have too much for them to handle. CardinalsDave: Cardinals poor start is baffling. Stanton looks like he is in line to start and must be ready from the first whistle. 49ers need to hope [quarterback Blaine] Gabbert can survive a defence with a chip on its shoulder, but I think the Cards will be too much to handle. Cardinals Minnesota Vikings @ Houston Texans (Sunday, 5:30pm Sky Sports 2)Richard: This Minnesota Vikings defence is for real! They lead the league with 11 takeaways and a plus-10 turnover differential. Defensive performance means the losses of starting QB Teddy Bridgewater and RB Adrian Peterson havent proven to be nearly so significant, with Sam Bradford managing the offence well and capitalising on opposition mistakes. The Texans are 2-2 but lead the AFC South; however its been a rocky start for highly paid free agent acquisition Brock Osweiler. Through four games, hes thrown more interceptions (six) than touchdowns (five). Thats not the kind of production Houston paid over $70m for and its compounded by the loss of their best defensive player for the season, J.J. Watt. On current form, its a big ask for this team to go to Minneapolis and come out on top. Vikings The Texans are without J.J. Watt and, despite beating the Titans in Week 4, face a tougher opposition on Sunday Dave: Losing Watt for the season is huge for the Texans who, like the Vikings, rely heavily on their defence. The Vikings defensive unit match up well against the Texans offence and should have enough weapons to remain undefeated. VikingsAtlanta Falcons @ Denver Broncos (Sunday, 9pm Sky Sports 2)Richard: Matt Ryan throwing for 500 yards, Julio Jones with 300 receiving yards. The Falcons offence has been good this season but on Sunday they exploded to take care of Carolina, and are now the No 1 ranked offence in the NFL. Going up against a defence which is widely believed to be the leagues best makes this a mouthwatering clash. Julio Jones had 300 yards in the Falcons win against Carolina. Can he cause similar problems for the formidable Broncos defence? Denver havent allowed more than 208 passing yards against them this season. Theyve only allowed two passing touchdowns and have claimed five interceptions. They also lead the league with 18 sacks. Although their QB Trevor Siemian left the game early in Tampa Bay through injury, they didnt miss a beat with rookie Paxton Lynch under centre. Siemian appears likely to play this weekend. They say a good defence will always beat a good offence. Denver proved that to be true in Super Bowl 50. At Mile High, well see if they can prevail over Atlanta. BroncosDave: Atlanta were awesome offensively against the Panthers and have the weapons to damage any team. Defensively they still give up too many yards but I believe that the Broncos defence will have all they can handle. Theres uncertainty at the quarterback position and offensive momentum could stall. Falcons Watch NOW TV Watch Sky Sports for just £6.99. No contract. New York Giants @ Green Bay Packers (Sunday, 1am Sky Sports 2)Richard: What has happened to Odell Beckham Jr? The Giants star wide receiver has yet to find the end zone in 2016 and frustration is starting to show. Erratic behaviour on the sideline in the loss to the Redskins was followed up on Monday night with complaints that officials are treating him harshly. It appears that Giants head coach Ben McAdoo and QB Eli Manning have had enough of his antics and told Beckham he needs to start controlling his emotions. They sorely need him to be at his best ahead of a tough looking trip to Lambeau Field on the back of a two-game losing streak. Odell Beckham Jr. is yet to score a touchdown in 2016 The Green Bay Packers are coming off of a bye week and have problems of their own that need addressing. Mike McCarthys team are yet to put a complete 60 minutes together with the Aaron Rodgers-led offence impressive in the first half of games against Jacksonville and Detroit but struggling to finish. Home-field advantage, combined with an extra week to prepare for the Giants, who come off a short week, is a combination which appears to stack the odds in Green Bays favour. PackersDave: Which Aaron Rodgers will show up? If the Giants can rattle him early they have a chance. However, New York have injuries on defence, and the offence looked lost against the Vikings. Manning and OBJ will need to get on the same page and produce a big game. Home advantage just sways me this week. PackersTampa Bay Buccaneers @ Carolina Panthers (Tuesday, 1:15am Sky Sports 1)Richard: This is a huge game for both teams. Not only is this an NFC South clash but both teams have disappointing 1-3 records. The Bucs have so far failed to show the improvement expected under new head coach Dirk Koetter, while the Panthers have been one of the more disappointing teams this season. Cam Newton was manhandled a week ago by the Vikings defence and on Sunday he was knocked out of the game against the Falcons. At the same time, Carolinas own defence simply isnt making the plays we saw in 2015.If Carolina are to be post-season challengers this year, this is a game they have to win. They face a quarterback in Jameis Winston who appears to have slightly regressed on his rookie year and, at times, doesnt seem to know where he is on the field. His only other road game this season was a disaster, albeit against a good Cardinals defence, as he threw four interceptions and lost a fumble. Home field advantage should help Carolina prevail. Panthers Cam Newton left Sundays game with a concussion Dave: Who envisaged this as a must-win game for Carolina? Newton looks a different player from last year, and the defence couldnt contain the Falcons attack. Tampa are a work in progress but Winston must restore confidence in himself and the offence. He will need to as the Buccaneers defence is 31st in points allowed, and Carolina can exploit their limited pass rush. The Senators are in the midst of a 2-5-2 skid, dropping them seven points behind the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, a position currently held by the Rangers. New York is tied for third place in the Metropolitan Division with the Columbus Blue Jackets, as both clubs have 76 points. However, the Blue Jackets have two games in hand to hold the current tiebreaker and push the Blueshirts out of one of the three automatic playoff bids in the division. The Senators have lost three straight and are coming off a 3-1 setback to the Colorado Avalanche. Ottawa was six seconds away from being shut out before Mika Zibanejad scored on a one-time blast. Robin Lehner stopped 19 shots in defeat. "We need wins right now, not moral victories," said Ottawa head coach Paul MacLean. Lehner was making his second straight start in place of the injured Craig Anderson, who suffered an upper-body injury in an overtime loss to the Nashville Predators last Monday. Anderson remains day-to-day and Lehner is likely to face the Rangers tonight for the second time in his career. He won the first meeting, stopping 33-of-35 shots faced. New York also is slumping, having lost six of its past nine games. That includes a tough-luck 1-0 loss to the San Jose Sharks on Sunday that denied goaltender Henrik Lundqvist a piece of teeam history.dddddddddddd Lundqvist made 28 saves and remains stuck on 301 career victories, tied with Mike Richter for the most in club history. The Rangers were denied a potential tying goal in the second period. Carl Hagelin forced a shot from a severe angle along the goal line to Antti Niemis left, and after the San Jose backstop virtually glued himself to the post, the puck was obscured underneath his equipment. A lengthy replay was not conclusive enough to overturn the original no-goal ruling on the ice. "I thought defensively we did what we had to do. Offensively, we did everything but finish. We had some very good looks, but we couldnt pull the trigger," New York coach Alain Vigneault said. "Youve got to believe if we keep playing this way, well be alright." Martin St. Louis played in his sixth game with the Rangers since being acquired from the Tampa Bay Lightning and has yet to score a goal with his new club. He has two assists and is a minus-1. St. Louis has 15 goals and 43 points in 50 career games versus the Senators, while Lundqvist is 11-14-3 with a 2.08 goals against average versus them. The Rangers snapped a five-game series losing streak to the Senators with a 4-1 win in Ottawa on Jan. 18. Derek Stepan had a goal and two assists, while Cam Talbot came up with 29 saves. The Blueshirts bested the Sens for only the second time in the last nine meetings and the recent victory snapped a three-game slide in Ottawa. ' ' '

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Marcus Mariota wrote it all down, every word of his Heisman Trophy acceptance speech. It was a good thing, too, because getting through it might have been tougher than sprinting away from a linebacker or tossing a touchdown pass for Oregons understated star. The junior quarterback became the Ducks first Heisman winner going away Saturday night, capping a three-year climb to college footballs most prestigious individual award.Im humbled to be standing here today, Mariota said moments after he was announced as the winner.Mariota isnt a bigger talker, but he steadily worked through his speech, thanking his teammates, teachers, friends and his home state of Hawaii. He finally hit a snag when it came time to thank his mother and father. He needed to take two deep breaths and still he got choked up.I had to give thanks to so many people because where I am today, its all do to all those people, Mariota said later. Its hard not to get emotional. Its been a long journey. My emotions got the best of me.A pinpoint passer with wide-receiver speed, Mariota came into this season as the favourite to win the 80th Heisman and delivered a performance that turned the presentation ceremony at a theatre in Times Square into a foregone conclusion.Mariota had twice as many points (2,534) as second-place finisher Melvin Gordon (1,250), the record-breaking running back from Wisconsin. The other finalist, Alabama receiver Amari Cooper, was third.Mariota received the second-highest percentage of possible points (90.92) in Heisman history, behind only Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith, who had 91.63 in 2006. Southern California tailback Reggie Bush received 91.77 per cent of possible points in 2005, but his victory was later vacated for violating NCAA rules.Mariota, the first Hawaii native to win the Heisman, has accounted for a Pac-12-record 53 touchdowns (38 passing, 14 rushing and one receiving) while directing the Ducks warp-speed spread offence. In Hawaii, if one person is successful, the entire state is successful, he said, draped in leis at his news conference. It will be a matchup of Heisman-winning quarterbacks in the College Football Playoffs Rose Bowl semifinal Jan. 1 with Mariota and the Ducks facing Florida State and Jameis Winston.Im just looking forward to getting back on the field and playing again, Mariota said. We do have a team goal.In an era when so many Heisman winners seemingly come from out of nowhere — the last two were the first freshmen winners — Mariotas rise was slow and steady.Three of the last four Heisman winners were in their first seasons as starters, including Cam Newton, who won the award in his only season at Auburn after transferring from a junior college. Before Newton, three straight sophomores won the award (Tim Tebow of Florida, Sam Bradford of Oklahoma and Mark Ingram of Alabama). Tebow was the first sophomore winner.Like Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel and Winston, the previous two winners, Mariota started as a redshirt freshman. It quickly established himself as a star, but unlike Johnny Football and Famous Jameis, Mariota wasnt the face of college football in his first season. In his second season he put up numbers that rivaled those of Heisman finalist quarterbacks Winston, Manziel, AJ McCarron and Jordan Lynch, but when it came time to vote for the Heisman, Mariota was forgotten. He didnt even finish in the top 10 in 2013.This season Mariota would not be ignored. He leads the nation in passer rating (186.2), is fifth in total offence (342.5 yards per game) and has led the Ducks to a Pac-12 title with a chance to play for their first national championship.Of course, patience and poise have defined Mariotas career. He didnt start for his high school team until he was a senior — then led Saint Louis in Honolulu to a state title.A quiet leader with a nice-guy reputation, Mariota brought no off-field baggage to this Heisman ceremony. After a season beset by off-field troubles, including a school hearing into sexual assault allegations, Winston wasnt a finalist this time around. He finished sixth.Oregons only Heisman finalists before Mariota were quarterback Joey Harrington in 2001 and running back LaMichael James in 2010.If you have your punch list of things as a program, the most iconic individual award would be the Heisman Trophy. But like Marcus said, I know hed trade all that to win as a team, Oregon coach Mark Helfrich said. For Harrington, Oregon, with Nikes help, put up a billboard in Times Square to promote their Heisman candidate.Oregon didnt need a billboard to get the word out about Mariota. A police inspector told The Associated Press the crane operator is not yet suspected of any wrongdoing but is considered a key witness to the accident at the Arena Corinthians.PINEHURST, N.C. -- The number on the scorecard was the same as Thursday but Graham DeLaet definitely felt as if he played much better at the U.S. Open on Friday than a day earlier. The Canadian, who used 75 strokes to get around Pinehurst No. 2, took 14 of those on just two holes, recording a triple and a double bogey. He also added a penalty shot on a morning that simply didnt go his way. Even with all that adventure and some visits to the newly added native areas, he walked off the course feeling not too badly about his play. "Im not even really disappointed because I felt I was in total control of my game all day," he said. "Three balls in that natural rough and twice I couldnt get a club on it and I made a triple and a double and the other time I went to move some debris next to my ball and my ball moved and that cost me a stroke. Other than that I played well all day." Thats the U.S. Open. So hard to make birdies, so easy to make doubles. DeLaet started his day on the right note, making his first birdie of the competition on the third hole. He cancelled that out with a bogey at six, when his approach shot came up short of the putting surface and he wasnt able to get up and down. On the eighth, however, disaster struck. DeLaets tee shot sailed left and ended up in a troubled lie against some wiregrass. His second to the green also went left and ended up in another almost impossible lie. He hacked it out and the ball ended up behind a tree, so he took an unplayable then chipped it over the green. He lobbed his next shot to 20 feet and, of coursse, dropped the putt for a triple.dddddddddddd Two holes later, another errant drive led to a double as he scrambled around the green, and a hole after that, he incurred the penalty. "I guess its a little disappointing," said DeLaet. "Coming in, I didnt expect to miss the cut. But at the same time I feel like I played well and a lot better than my score but thats the U.S. Open and Im packing." This was DeLaets first time teeing it up in the American championship and the learning curve is steep. Its also the third straight major in which hes failed to make it to the weekend, something thats frustrating for 32-year-old. "I feel like my game should be suited for tough golf courses," he stated, "but my record hasnt shown that quite yet. "Theres a lot more to [the Majors] than golfing your ball. There are all the outside distractions and the mental pressure and everything that goes along with a major championship. Now Ive got my feet wet in all four and Im looking forward to the next one." DeLaet is planning to play the next two events on the PGA Tour as well as the RBC Canada Cup, a special outing in Halifax as part of the new Web.com Tour event there. Hell then take two weeks off before playing a long stretch of what could be eight tournaments in nine weeks, including the RBC Canadian Open. The schedule will be busy, DeLaet said, but it isnt as if hes moving pianos. "Im playing professional golf and going to a lot of cool places," he said. "Overseas, Montreal . . . you cant really complain." ' ' '

"When you think the way youre supposed to, thats when you help the team most. When you hold back, when you dont allow yourself to reach your full potential obviously you hinder the team. I want to do nothing but help the team and the only way I can is thinking as the starter." Montreal agreed with Smith, a former Heisman Trophy winner at Ohio State, and youngster Tanner Marsh on three-year contracts Friday. Both took significant snaps with the club in 2013 after incumbent Anthony Calvillo suffered a season-ending concussion. Montreal continues to await official word from Calvillo, 41, regarding his CFL future. But in November, pro footballs all-time passing leader admitted hes leaning towards retirement. Jim Popp, Montreals head coach and GM, said there was plenty to like about Smiths play last season. "Im very impressed with Troys leadership, communication skills and ability to grab his teammates attention," Popp said. "Last season, Troy quickly proved to us he can adapt to the CFL and showed great promise for the future." Smith, 29, joined the Alouettes roughly midway through the season and took over as the starter Oct. 20, compiling a 2-1 record. Montreal finished third in the East Division with an 8-11 record and the six-foot, 225-pound Smith was under centre for the clubs 19-16 overtime loss to Hamilton in the conference semifinal. Late in the fourth quarter, game officials missed a pass interference call in the end zone on Montreals Duron Carter. Instead of getting the ball at the Hamilton one-yard line with a chance for the go-ahead touchdown, the Alouettes had to settle for a field goal to force overtime. "Losing on a fluke call does nothing but leave a bitter taste in my mouth," Smith said. "Playing last year makes me a liittle more hungry, a little more thirsty about having the chance and possibility to get to the Grey Cup.dddddddddddd "Its on." Marsh began his rookie season third on Montreals depth chart behind Calvillo and backup Josh Neiswander. On Aug. 22, the former Arkansas Tech star came off the bench to rally Montreal to a thrilling 39-38 home win over B.C., his 57-yard completion to Eric Deslauriers setting up the game-winning field goal. The six-foot-four, 218-pound Marsh finished his rookie season completing 56-of-106 passes for 972 yards with three TDs and eight interceptions. He also ran for 125 yards and two TDs on 21 carries. Heady stuff considering Marsh arrived in Montreal with low expectations. "I was just hoping to make the practice squad," he said via telephone from Russellville, Ark. "The next thing you know, a year later I sign an extension, which is pretty darn awesome." Popp said Marsh impressed with both his legs and arm. "Were excited about Tanner," he said. "Were looking forward to seeing his athletic skills and his dual-threat ability as he continues to develop into what we feel will be a premier player. "His performance versus B.C. made him an instant icon in Montreal. Marsh Madness continues." But Marsh understands hell return to Montreal in 2014 with no guarantees. "I got an extension so obviously they have faith in me," he said. "It gives me a chance to come back next year and compete. "It gives me a little confidence to come in and compete and know I have a chance to be the quarterback with the Montreal Alouettes for the next three years." Marsh has no indication what Calvillo will ultimately decide but admitted he was stunned by Calvillos football knowledge. "The biggest thing I learned last year was I have a lot to learn," Marsh said. "I remember A.C. and I going over reads and every little thing. "After that first meeting, I was like, Wow, theres a reason why hes the best. I learned more from him than I could even describe." ' ' '

LAS VEGAS -- The diagonal scar on the bridge of Alexis Daviss nose seems par for the course for a UFC fighter. The story behind the mark predates cage-fighting, however. "It was from when I was a kid, actually," the Canadian bantamweight admitted with a smile. "I was playing around with my sister. I say she pushed me, but she says I tripped." The 29-year-old from Port Colborne, Ont., who fights out of San Jose, has had her share of fight cuts that have morphed into scars. But they are hidden nicely by her eyebrows. The other good news is blood does not bother Davis. In fact, it can spur her into action as in a November 2013 win over Liz Carmouche when she turned it up a notch after being cut over her eye. "It kind of wakes you up a little bit more. Youre like, Yup, that was a good shot. Now its my turn," said Davis. Suffice to say, theres more to the soft-spoken Davis than meets the eye. That seems to have escaped the bookmakers, who have made unbeaten champion (Rowdy) Ronda Rousey a prohibitive favourite to dispatch Davis -- ranked No. 2 among 135-pound contenders -- in the co-main event of UFC 175 on Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Middleweight champion Chris Weidman takes on former light-heavyweight title-holder Lyoto (The Dragon) Machida in the main event. Rousey (9-0) ranged from a 9-1 to 14-1 favourite as of Friday. The UFC had her as a 10-1 favourite. The bookies clearly havent been to Daviss home, which comes complete with fold-up wrestling mats stashed in the living room. When youre an elite UFC fighter and married to a fellow black belt in jiu-jitsu, you like to be able to put a theory in action when something new and exciting pops into your mind. Davis (16-5) met husband-to-be Flavio Meier three years ago at his gym in California. An accomplished black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu (his titles include the 2011 Pan-American championship for black belts) and taekwondo, he is a head instructor at the Institute of Martial Arts in San Jose. Meier, who moved to the U.S. from Brazil in 1999, says it was love at first sight -- for him. "But I had to work a little bit for her," he said. That was three years ago. They married a year ago, with Meiers three boys -- now aged four, 10 and 13 -- from a previous marriage coming as part of the package. "Its another side of her that a lot of people dont know," he said. "How caring and what a great person she is. The kids love her." The 39-year-old Meier says Daviss healthy lifestyle and work ethic are great examples for the kids. The whole family trains at the gym -- even the four-year-old takes a kids class. "Hes got a dangerous armbar," joked Davis. Meier says he finds it a lot easier competing himself than watching his wife fight. "I get nervous. I dont show her but I do get nerves a lot," he said. When it comes to jiu-jitsu, both say the other is better. "He always says that I beat him up but he beats me up all the time," said Davis, who has a black belt in both Brazilian and Japanese jiu-jitsu. "Im not saying this in bias because shes my wife, but to me she is the best in the world in jiu-jitsu," said Meier. "In MMA, for sure." The 27-year-old Rousey, however, is the UFCs resident rock star. At the UFCs media day Thursday, more than a dozen reporters and four cameras were waiting in front of Rouseys chair in advance of the start. There was one Canadian reporter in front of Daviss station. Davis has no complaints. The spotlight is new to her and, while not averse to it, she is still getting used to it. "Im just a girl from a small town," she said. "Its crazy the different steps Ive taken in my life and how far Ive come. All the way to California now. Im in a video game. How cool is that? Its incredible, its almost like unreal to me. But its great. I love it." Davis has enjoyed every stop of her MMA journey. "Lifes an adventure," she said. "Its taken me to a lot of places and Ive met great people." In Rousey, she is meeting a finisher. The champion has never gone the distance and her average fight time over her night-fight career is just two minutes 44 seconds. Rousey has used her judo takedown successfully in 12 of 17 attempts in the UFC for a 70.6 per cent success rate (the average UFC takedown rate is 41 per cent.) On the Davis side of the balance, the Canadian has never been submitted in 21 fights. She has outlanded her five previous opponents and scores well in the clinch. Asked about the showdown, former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion B.J. Penn lists off Rouseys strengths and successes. "What Alexis should have is a lot of hunger to be that woman and thats how she can get the job done," he said. A veteran of the sport, Davis had compiled a 9-4 record before Rousey made her pro MMA debut in March 2011. Davis made her pro debut in April 2007, losing by TKO to fellow Canadian Sarah Kaufman. Davis lost again to Kaufman, now ranked fifth among UFC bantamweight contenders, by majority decision in Strikeforce in March 2012. She says the second Kaufman showcased the old Alexis Davis -- "Im just going out there and Im just going to bang and I dont care what happens. You kind of take a lot of shots that way." Davis has won five fights in a row since, coinciding with her move to California and ability to take advantage of a larger and more diverse pool of training partners. She worked with Cesar Gracie before settling at the Institute of Martial Arts, owned by eight-time jiu-jitsu world champion Caio Terra who will be in her corner Saturday along with Meier. Davis added two-hour trips twice a week to Sacramento to her training camp this time, to work on her wrestling with Uriah Fabers Team Alpha Male. The thought is wrestling may help control the explosive throws of Rousey, who won Olympic bronze in judo. "They always say that wrestling is like the anti-judo," said Davis. But Davis, who speaks of Rousey with real respect, says its hard to prepare for the champion because Rousey evolves every time she fights. "Its like a whole new Ronda were seeing every time," said Davis. While Rousey is known for her armbar, she has good standup and stopped Sara McMann with a knee to the body. "I want the fight to go to the ground," said Davis. "I just want it to go on my terms." But she says she is comfortable wherever the fight goes. Davis has worked hard on her standup game and has good kicks, although she says she sometimes forgets to use them. The five-foot-six Canadian believes the fight will either end in the first round or go five rounds. The two women have shown plenty of mutual respect, exchanging a warm handshake after posing in front of the media Thursday. Rousey and Davis are the only female fighters to go 3-0 in the UFC. But while Rousey has made movies ("The Expendables 3," "Entourage" and "Fast and Furious 7"), earned ESPY Award nominations and appeared on the cover of ESPN The Magazine, Davis has flown under the radar. Asked whether she has treated herself with any of her UFC fight paycheques, Davis admits only to buying a new TV. "Were kind of saving up," she said. "Id like to eventually buy a house." A win Saturday would make Davis only the third Canadian to hold a UFC title, following Carlos (Ronin) Newton and Georges St-Pierre. It would also change her world. Despite the lopsided odds, Meier says bet on it. "Saturday shes going to shock the world," he said. "I know this for sure." Canada finished 12th overall in 2012-13, securing its status as one of the competitions core teams. Highlights included Dubai (sixth), the U.S. (fifth) and Hong Kong (sixth). But there were poor showings in Japan and South Africa where Canada ended up in Shield play, the bottom consolation rung. "If we want to be regarded as a top team and try and break into that top-10 barrier, which I think were very capable of, we just need to be a little bit more consistent," head coach Geraint John said Thursday. "That will be our goal this year. "When we play well, we are one of the most difficult sides to beat and we perform very well . . . We need to get that consistency are each tournament. That will make us not just a good team but a very good team," he added. Canada opens Saturday against powerful Fiji before playing Wales and Portugal to determine whom it plays Sunday. Connor Braid, who saw time in England with Doncaster last season, and Sean Ferguson, on the sevens team in 2011-12, are also on the roster. Canada starts the season with a big ask, given its 2-33 career record against Fiji. Fiji, defending champions in Australia, finished third overall on the circuit last season. But Canada can point to a 28-19 win over Fiji in the Bowl final in New Zealand in February. The Canadians are 7-20 against Wales and 12-8 against Portugal. As is their tradition, the Canadians played tourist Thursday to see some of the local sights. Their destination was an animal sanctuary to see some koala bears. ' ' '

UNIONDALE, N.Y. - Martin Brodeur wasnt planning to be in net for the St. Louis Blues net on Saturday. But after they fell behind the Islanders 3-0, the goaltender with the most victories in league history entered in relief and his new team rallied to win 6-4.Paul Stastny scored twice — including the go-ahead goal in the third period — and Brodeur had his first win in a St. Louis uniform after 688 victories with the New Jersey Devils.Stastnys second goal of the game and his fifth of the season at 13:26 of the third snapped a 4-4 tie and gave the Blues their first lead. St. Louis fell behind by three goals in the first period, then replaced starter Jake Allen with Brodeur to start the second. It changed momentum to put me in there. It worked out well, Brodeur said. When it was 3-3, I said Here we go. Its my game now.Brodeur made 14 saves for career win No. 689 and his 52nd against the Islanders, the most for the 42-year-old goaltender against any team. Brodeur stopped Brock Nelson and Anders Lee in front early in the third and was hardly tested late.I felt pretty good. Im not a guy that is used to come from the bench. Ive got to get used to it, I think, Brodeur added. Im happy with the performance. I made some solid saves in the third to keep the game tied up and we scored some big goals after that.Tavares scored against Brodeur to put the Islanders ahead 4-3 with 54 seconds left in the middle period. Ive played enough games here, Brodeur said of Nassau Coliseum, which the Islanders will leave after this season for Brooklyns Barclays Center. Its kind of nice that I was able to get in there and play in the final year of this building. The Islanders had their three-game winning streak snapped and lost for only the third time in their past 16 games. It was a lack of focus and attention to detail, Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. We have to trust ourselves that we can do better.Nielsen opened the scoring at 7:57 of the first on the power play. He picked up a rebound in front of Allen and slid it into the net with assists to Nelson and Kyle Okposo for his sixth goal of the season.Strome added his sixth goal unassisted at 18:01 after intercepting a clearing attempt by Blues defenceman Kevin Shattenkirk at the blue line.Grabner — who missed the first 25 games recovering from a sports hernia — then scored his first goal in his second game back at 19:39 and Islanders cruised into the second with a 3-0 lead. After Brodeur skated to the Blues crease and was greeted by the Marty, Marty chants, the Blues went to work against Jaroslav Halak, who played three-plus seasons for St. Louis and beat the Islanders twice last season.Halak had his team-record 11-game winning streak snapped to fall to 14-5-0. The six goals were the most hed given up this season.Stastny scored on the power play at 2:36 of the second before Patrik Berglund deflected a Chris Butler slap shot at 4:28 to make it 3-2.Shattenkirk, who also had two assists, tied it with a power-play shot from the point at 12:34 and suddenly Brodeur became the goaltender of record.Hes one of those guys who when you look back on his career he has all these special moments, Shattenkirk said of his new teammate. Houston, meanwhile, had inteended to throw righty Jarred Cosart in the opener, but he was dealt to Miami earlier in the day as part of a six-player deal at the non-waiver trade deadline.dddddddddddd So instead it will be righty Jake Buchanan, who is 1-1 this season with a 5.56 ERA. Buchanan has pitched primarily out of the bullpen this season, but did start a game against Tampa Bay back on June 21. However, he surrendered five runs in 4 1/3 innings of that one. Houston picked up a series win against Oakland on Wednesday, as Robbie Grossmans two-run homer capped the six-run first inning that propelled the Astros to an 8-1 win. Houston starter Dallas Keuchel (10-7) was superb en route to his AL-leading fourth complete game of the season. The left-hander yielded just a run on four hits over nine dominant innings and earned his first career win against Oakland in five starts. Keuchel said he was lucky to get early swings from the As batters. He threw 111 pitches, including 70 strikes. "I looked up and it was the eighth inning," Keuchel said. Jon Singleton also homered for the Astros and Jose Altuve extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the sixth. Toronto took two of three from the Astros earlier in the year. ' ' '

Turin, Italy (SportsNetwork.com) - Juventus and Roma will both aim to maintain their perfect records in Serie A on Sunday when the two title favorites clash at Juventus Stadium. Juve has captured the past three league titles, and Massimiliano Allegris men are firm favorites to add a fourth straight this season, with Roma looking to be the biggest threat to the Old Lady. Both teams have started the campaign with five wins from five fixtures, and Juve has yet to concede a goal, while Roma has given away just one. Last term it was Roma that pushed Juve to finish line, only to come up a bit short, and Rudi Garcias men will look to lay down an early marker on Sunday to continue their good start. Roma has yet to taste defeat in all competitions after earning a 1-1 draw at Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday, while Juventus suffered its first setback on Wednesday in a 1-0 Champions League loss at Atletico Madrid. Despite that setback, Allegri is confident heading into one of his sides most important games in Serie A this season. Juve arrive in good shape, as we won all five in Serie A and still havent conceded there, Allegri said on Wednesday following the setback to Atletico. It will certainly be a great game and tonights defeat will not change the atmosphere in the team. Udinese has started well with four wins from five games and the teams lone defeat came to Juventus. That good start has a strong chance to continue on Sunday with a home match against Cesena, which owns one win from five games. Sampdoria is the only other unbeaten team in Serie A and the club will put that mark on the line against 16th-place Atalanta at home. Inter Milan sustained a humbling 4-1 home defeat to Cagliari last weekend, and the Walter Mazzarris side will aim to bounce back at mid-table Fiorentina, while AC Milan hopes to end a three-game winless run in the league when the Rossoneri entertain Chievo. Hellas Verona has started well with eight points from five games and the team hosts Cagliari, Empoli and Palermo square off with both sides searching for their first win of the season, Lazio entertains last-place Sassuolo, Genoa invades Parma and Napoli tangles with Torino. Charles Barkley Jersey . Left-handed reliever Boone Logan agreed to a $16.5 million, three-year contract on Friday, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.Another chapter will be written in Ottawas CFL story when the Redblacks play their first home game in franchise history Friday night against the Toronto Argonauts. However, it will be far from the first professional football game the nations capital has seen. For almost a century they were known as the Rough Riders (not to be confused with the Roughriders from Saskatchewan). Then, after a six year absence, the city returned to the CFL with the Renegades for a short and controversial four-year stint. Now after a time where some thought it could never happen, football has returned to Ottawa with a new name, a new group of players and new optimism. Looking back at their long history, Ottawa definitely has had some proud - and not so proud - moments on and off the gridiron. The Early Years Before they were the Rough Riders, they were simply known as the Ottawa Football Club, formed in 1876. It wasnt until 1898 when they changed their name to the Rough Riders. For a five-year stint from 1925-30, they were called the Ottawa Senators before changing the name back. In the early 1950s Ottawa hosted the NFLs New York Giants for a pair of exhibition games, losing both times. They won four Grey Cup championships (1925, 1926, 1940 and 1951) before the Canadian Football League officially formed in 1958. The Glory Years The Rough Riders won five Grey Cups under the CFL umbrella from 1960-76 (1960, 1968, 1969, 1973 and 1976) with Frank Clair manning the sidelines as head coach and Canadians such as quarterback Russ Jackson, receiver Whit Tucker, running back Ron Stewart and tight end Tony Gabriel leading the charge on the gridiron. Jackson of Hamilton, Ont. is widely considered to be the greatest Canadian-born quarterback to play in the CFL and is a member of the Order of Canada, the Canadian Football of Fame and Canadas Sports Hall of Fame. He even finished eighth - and as the top Canadian - in TSNs ranking of the top 50 CFLers of all-time. Ottawa could run during those successful years as well. Rough Riders running back Vic Washington has the record for longest rushing touchdown in Grey Cup history with an 80-yard scamper during their 1968 Grey Cup victory over the Calgary Stampeders. Their final championship season came in 1976 and is probably the most notable. Burlingtons Tony Gabriel caught a deep touchdown pass from quarterback Tom Clements with just 20 seconds remaining in the final quarter to defeat their hated rivals, the Saskatchewan Roughriders 23-20. It became known as simply "The Catch" and was arguably the greatest moment in Rough Riders history as well as one of the most memorable Grey Cup plays ever. Ottawa made one more Grey Cup final appearance in 1981 against the Edmonton Eskimos - a game in which they blew a 19-point halftime lead to lose 26-23. With nine championships, the Rough Riders are fourth all-time in Grey Cup victories behind the Argonauts (16), Eskimos (13) and Blue Bombers (10). The Decline From 19883 to the end of their existence in 1996, the Rough Riders never put together another winning season and didnt win a single playoff game.dddddddddddd. As the team struggled mightily, fans stopped coming out and the franchise lost money at a rapid rate. One positive note from this era came in 1988 when Jo-Anne Polak was named co-general manager of the team, which made her the first woman to be appointed to an executive title in CFL history. On the other side of the spectrum, there was the time when Ottawa management drafted a dead man. Derrell Robertson was a defensive end who played one season with the Las Vegas Posse in 1994 during the CFLs doomed American expansion. Shortly after the season, the 27-year-old died in a car accident. With the Posse folding after just one season, all their players became available through a dispersal draft and Ottawa drafted Robertson fully believing he was alive and well. Not a great moment for a franchise that was on its last legs. The team folded in 1996, 120 years after the Ottawa Football Club played their first game against the Aylmer Club at Jacques-Cartier Square. Franchise Records Most Career Touchdowns: Bob Simpson (Windsor, Ont.) - 70 Most Career Passing Yards: Russ Jackson (Hamilton, Ont.) - 24, 592 yards Most Career Passing Touchdowns: Russ Jackson - 185 Most Passing Touchdowns in a Season: Damon Allen (American) - 34 in 1990 Most Career Rushing Yards: Dave Thelen (American) - 6, 917 Most Career Receiving Yards: Tony Gabriel (Burlington, Ont.) - 7, 484 Most Career Receptions: Tony Gabriel - 444 Back With The Renegades In 2002, Ottawa was back in the CFL game, this time with the Renegades. Hope was back in the nations capital with an entirely new franchise, but it ultimately didnt last very long. Over four seasons, the Renegades would win only 23 games and never got a sniff of the post-season. On April 9, 2006 the CFL suspended operations of the franchise after low attendance and unstable ownership from the Glieberman family. Football was done in Ottawa - again. A New Hope In 2008, a group led by Ottawa 67s owner Jeff Hunt was awarded a conditional CFL franchise that would become the Redblacks. After getting approval for a redevelopment of Lansdowne Park and the hiring of general manager Marcel Desjardins as well as head coach Rick Campbell, Ottawa was finally ready to start putting another team together. Receiver Fred Rouse, defensive lineman Dimetrio Tyson and defensive back Nick Turnbull became the first signings in franchise history. They would later sign free agent and veteran quarterback Henry Burris to a contract. The Redblacks have gone 0-2 so far in 2014, losing games on the road to the Blue Bombers and Eskimos. With a rejuvenated fan base and stable ownership along with a fairly strong team by expansion standards, this version of Ottawa football seems like its here to stay. And thats all football fans in the nations capital want to hear. ' ' '

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The last time Tom Brady faced the Baltimore Ravens in the playoffs, he threw interceptions on the New England Patriots final two drives. In their three playoff matchups, he lost twice. All those games were at Gillette Stadium, where the post-season rivals meet Saturday for the fourth time in six years.Brady says none of that history will matter when he takes his first snap in the divisional playoff on the path to what he hopes will be his fourth straight AFC title game.I dont think thats really useful, the quarterback said Tuesday. We cant change what has happened. You just have to move forward and you have to think about the things that weve done really well this year. That would be:Going 12-4 and earning the top seed in the AFC. Scoring the fourth most points in the NFL. Having a strong defence with outstanding cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner. Leadership from a quarterback with the fifth best passer rating. And production from a tight end, Rob Gronkowski, with the most receptions for anyone at his position and excellent blocking ability.Weve put ourselves in a good position, Brady said after returning to practice following a first-round bye. Weve just got to take advantage of it.They didnt do that in two of their three playoff games against the Ravens.Their post-season rivalry began with Baltimores 33-14 wild-card win in the 2009 season. Two years later, New England won 23-20 to advance to the Super Bowl, where it lost to the New York Giants. In Bradys second consecutive AFC championship matchup with the Ravens on Jan. 20, 2013, the Patriots lost 28-13 after leading 13-7 at halftime. Those three games were hardly Bradys best: a total of three touchdown passes, seven interceptions and a 56.1 completion percentage. The Patriots did rout the Ravens in Baltimore last season 41-7, but Brady didnt have to do much. They led 17-0 early in the second quarter, LeGarrette Blount ran for two touchdowns and the defence produced four turnovers and four sacks. Those three playoff games might make for some pretty ugly viewing, but watching film of them might provide useful tips. Its the same (defensive) co-ordinator so a lot of the scheme stuff you see how he (Dean Pees) tried to defend us back then, Brady said. Were a different team now, too, so I think the more information the better.Theyre a different team.Fiery linebacker Terrell Suggs is still around for the Ravens (11-6) and had an interception in last Saturdays 30-17 wild-card win over Pittsburgh. And hes no fan of Bradys, having criticized him for complaining to officials. But four days before their most important game of the season, both downplayed any differences.Hes phenomenal, Brady said. Weve never really talked a lot on the field. Weve never really talked much off the field either. So, its the way it goes, but hes a great player.Suggs had a simple explanation for how he views Brady.Hes a quarterback. Im a defender. Hes got a job to do and so do I, so naturally there are going to be some disagreements there, he said Tuesday. Nobodys really worried about what happened in the past. The only thing were worrying about is this game. The Ravens were second in the NFL with 49 sacks, led by Elvis Dumervil with 17 and Suggs with 12.But theyre 24th in pass defence and tied for 25th with 11 interceptionsThe Patriots offensive line should be back intact after left guard Dan Connolly missed the last two games with a knee injury. Its a lot of pressure on us to do a good job, Connolly said. Its our job to make sure Tom stays upright. In beating the Steelers, the Ravens sacked Pittsburghs Ben Roethslisberger five timesThe Patriots got back to work on Tuesday, working out in pads on a chilly day after five days without practice. Its been great for everybody to get your body a chance to take a little break and heal up a little bit, Brady said. This is a first step for us. A lot of teams played last week. We didnt get a chance to do that. His next chance to beat the Ravens is just a few days away.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL Tyrone Hill Cavaliers Jersey .C. Lions. "Theyve been good against everybody," he said. Carlos Gomez launched a three-run homer and Matt Garza battled into the seventh inning for his first win in four starts to help the Brewers continue their mastery of the Rockies with a 7-4 victory Saturday. "Theyve got the best record in the National League," Weiss said. "Theyre doing everything well. All aspects of their game are rolling right now. Theyre getting good starts, the bullpen has been very good and its a potent lineup. You put all those things together and youve got 50-plus wins at this point." Garza (5-5) pitched five scoreless innings before allowing two runs each in the sixth and seventh. His first win since June 7 helped the Brewers improve to a season-high 19 games above .500 at 51-32. They also are 6-0 against the Rockies this season. Francisco Rodriguez, who got the victory Friday night despite blowing the save, pitched a perfect ninth inning for his majors-best 27th save. "Ive never played with an offence as good as this," said Garza, who is 3-1 in six June starts with a 2.88 ERA. "When I played with Tampa, we were lucky to scratch out what we could. Chicago, you know the story there. You just keep going. Its a different type of mindset. When you get runs this quick, you have to keep attacking. You cant let up: stay aggressive, go after these guys and not give in. Gomez staked the Brewers to a 3-0 lead in the first with his 13th home run. Ryan Braun and Jonathan Lucroy reached on consecutive singles and Gomez then drove a 3-2 pitch from Jhoulys Chacin (1-7) over the centre-field wall. "I just tried to keep it simple," said Gomez, who left the game in the seventh inning with a left neck strain after colliding with Braun in the outfield. "They got me out the whole series in Colorado and here. I didnt expect that pitch in. Its supposed to be a ball and I put good contact on it, I didnt try to do too much and thats how I did it." The Brewers added three runs in the fifth to make it 6-0. Jean Segura singled to open, advanced on Garzas sacrifice bunt and moved to third on Scooter Gennetts infiield single.dddddddddddd Braun followed with a triple into the corner when right-fielder Charlie Blackmon missed on a diving attempt at the sinking liner. Braun scored on Lucroys groundout. Colorado got two runs in the sixth after loading the bases with three consecutive one-out singles. Drew Stubbs bloop single to shallow right drove in one run and Troy Tulowitzki followed with a sacrifice fly. The Brewers answered with a run in the bottom of the inning on Lyle Overbays RBI single to increase the lead to 7-2. The Rockies chased Garza with two runs in the seventh on a single by Wilin Rosario, a double by Ryan Wheeler and D.J. LeMahieus two-run single. "Eight out of those nine hits they got, I thought probably werent hard enough, but theyre still hits," said Garza, signed to a $50 million, four-year deal, "Sometimes they fall in so you have to just keep making pitches. Its frustrating but we still came out with a W so it is what it is. Ill take the soft hits over them barrelling them up." In the third inning, the Brewers successfully challenged a call by first base umpire C.B. Bucknor. Josh Rutledge singled to open and LeMahieu followed with a liner to second baseman Rickie Weeks. The throw to first from Weeks hit Rutledge, who got back safely when first baseman Overbay couldnt corral the ball. Rutledge then came off the bag again, but dove back and was originally called safe on the tag by Overbay. The call was overturned after a review of 1 minute, 42 seconds. NOTES: The Brewers said Gomez is day to day. ... To eliminate the shadows between the mound and home plate during day games at Miller Park, the first-base half of the roof was closed, while the third-base side remained completely open. . Jabari Parker, the first-round pick of the Milwaukee Bucks and the No. 2 overall pick in the recent NBA draft, threw out the first pitch, wearing a Brewers jersey with his name and No. 12 on the back. The 6-foot-8 right-hander snapped off a one-hopper to the plate. . The third-inning challenge was the Brewers first since May 31. They are 6-5 in challenges. . INDIANAPOLIS - Andrew Luck hears the instructions every week.Avoid turnovers.Get the ball to his cast of playmakers.Win at home. Its been a proven plan for years in the NFL, and now, after blowing a 14-point second-half lead in their home opener two weeks ago, the Colts franchise quarterback knows his team cannot afford another misstep on its home turf. Especially against a division rival. You have to win your home games and protect that turf, Luck said. We take that to heart and we know we need to get back on the right track.Indy (1-2) took one step last week by beating up on winless Jacksonville to snap the first two-game losing streak of Lucks career. Now comes reeling Tennessee (1-2), which is 0-6 at Lucas Oil Stadium. On paper, Sundays game looks as if its two teams going in opposite directions.Luck seems to be getting in sync, having reduced his interception total in each of the first three weeks while taking the league lead in touchdown passes (nine). The Colts ground game has provided balance, the makeshift offensive line is playing with more cohesiveness, they are coming off their first turnover-free game of the season. And a defence that limited Peyton Manning to seven second-half points and Philadelphia to six first-half points put together its most complete game against the Jaguars. The Titans defence, meanwhile, has allowed 59 points in two straight losses after opening the season with a win over Kansas City.Things arent about to get any easier. For the second straight week, Tennessee faces a defending division champ on the road, this time potentially without starting quarterback Jake Locker who injured the wrist on his throwing arm.But coach Ken Whisenhunt is more concerned with making corrections.I think we need to cut penalties out. Weve had way too many of those, Whisenhunt said when asked about fixing the defence. Weve got to play better, as far as some of the technique things that were doing to try and keep teams from having sustained drives on us.The Colts will try to get back to the basics of Chuck Paganos hometown plan.Weve got to stack wins together, Luck said. We dug ourselves a bit of a hole with those first two weeks, but I think were on the right track. Hopefully, we can keep this momentum going. Here are some other things to watch Sunday.THE LOCKER ROOM: Whisenhunt and Titans doctors will closely monitor Lockers health before making a decision. Locker completes 56.4 per cent of his passes and is tied for the league high in interceptions (four). If he doesnt play, longtime journeyman but little-used Charlie Whitehurst would likely make his fifth career start. Whitehurst hasnt thrown a pass since 2011 and has a career completion rate of 54.2 and more interceptions (four) than touchdowns (three).DIVISION CHASE: Sure, its early, but the Colts are already in the midst of a key four-week stretch with three games against AFC South foes. A sweep would allow the Colts to take control of the division race. And it could happen. Indy has won eight straight over division opponents, the longest active streak in the league. Against Tennessee, the Colts have been even better a€” winning five straight and 10 of the past 11.SLOW STARTS: A year ago, Indy had to perpetually dig itself out of slow starts. Now, its the Titans turn. Tennessee has been outscored 16-0 and 19-0 in the first half of its past two games, and if the Titans fall behind early again Sunday, it will only compound the potential problems for a team that wont be at full strength a€” with or without Locker.GROUND CHUCK: Pagano has the one-two punch in the ground game. Ahmad Bradshaw is healthy, running hard and catching passes. Trent Richardson has shown steady improvement. The combination has allowed Indy to rush for 313 yards over the past two weeks. Tennessees struggling run defence must find a way to slow down the suddenly efficient Colts.WAYNES MILESTONES: Reggie Wayne could turn this weeks game into another personal showcase. He needs three receptions to pass Isaac Bruce for seventh on the NFLs career list, 24 yards receiving to pass Henry Ellard for No. 10 all time. A three-catch day would extend Waynes NFL record to 75 straight games, and it could all come in his 200th game.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL Devin Robinson Raptors Jersey . The match got contentious in stoppage time just before the break when Futty Danso was called for a foul in the penalty area and Higuain beat Ricketts. The Providence Park crowd loudly booed the refs, and Timbers coach Caleb Porter shouted at them as the team walked off the field. This is the only match between the teams this season. Heres what Charlie is predicting in his Sky Bet tips...Slovenia v England England were 2-0 winners against Malta in their World Cup qualifier on Saturday It wasnt a glorious performance against Malta but did anybody really expect it to be an exciting game? I thought it should have been four or five but Malta never came out to play.We know Slovenia are technically decent but have they got enough to take on the big teams? Im not sure. Its a similar one to the Slovakia game and youd hope, being the home side, that they try to win the game. Find out who are the key players England can expect to face against Slovenia in their World Cup qualifier on Tuesday Theres this issue with Wayne Rooney, but what are the specifics of it? Are people are suggesting if he doesnt play No. 10 then he doesnt play? Dele Alli has clearly been picked to play somewhere else? There seems to be personal agenda against Rooney and its annoying one, even for a Scotsman! What we do know is Gareth Southgate likes Jesse Lingard. He played okay and got in some decent positions but I couldnt get excited about that performance at home to Malta. Gareth Southgate will take charge of his second game as England interim manager this week This is one of those games where youll create a few chances, take one and leave with the points but if Southgate is bold enough to stick with the forwards that he picked against a Malta then I think theyll win by more than goal and actually get more of a cut through with Theo Walcotts pace away if its more of an open game.Charlie predicts: 0-2 and Walcott to score first (22/1 with Sky Bet)Germany v Northern IrelandWell I know they did well there last time they met theres less pressure on the Germans this time, with six points on the board following 3-0 wins over their supposed main rivals to win the group, Czech Republic and Norway. Kyle Lafferty netted twice in Saturdays victory over San Marino I love watching different games on Match Choice because I dont always follow the Home Nations and there are games I wanted to see, such as how Spains new system worked at Albania and how Germany are evolving.ddddddddddddThe bad news is they dont really need to change much, with Mesut Ozil, Thomas Muller and Toni Kroos going boom, boom, boom. Theyre strong, theyre quick, theyre powerful. Highlights of Northern Irelands 4-0 win over San Marino from World Cup Qualifying Group C Northern Ireland are well-drilled but I just see how they can get through this one unscathed with so many threats to be wary of. Jonas Hector and Joshua Kimmich are virtually left and right wingers. They hardly ever defend and they are hitting the byline for fun.Charlie predicts: 2-0 and Muller to score first (9/1 with Sky Bet)Slovakia v ScotlandWell, Im a critical Scotland fan but we were awful. There are more high profile names in the mix for the vacant general manager job with the Pittsburgh Penguins, as TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reports that the club has reached out to former Carolina Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford about possibly joining the team. Rutherford recently stepped down from his post with the Hurricanes after 20 seasons with the club. Under his guidance, the Hurricanes tallied a 534-486-156-20 regular season record, along with two trips to the Stanley Cup Final and the teams first Stanley Cup title in 2006. LeBrun adds that Tampa Bay Lightning assistant general manager Julien BriseBois is another prime candidate. On Monday, Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal reported that former Penguins assistant coach and current TV analyst Pierre McGuire has had two interviews with the team. The Penguins fired Ray Shero last month after the team gave up a 3-1 series lead before being eliminated by the New York Rangers in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Will Grier Jersey . Teetering Tenures In a live chat on Tuesday afternoon, ESPN.coms Katie Strange said she believes Dustin Byfuglien may not be a member of the Winnipeg Jets much longer. In a response to a question about the future of the 6-foot-5, 265 lbs. defenceman, Strange was short and to the point. "I can see Dustin Byfuglien being dealt, yes. His size, offensive ability, and versatility will likely be attractive to some teams. Right-handed defensemen are hard to find," she wrote. Byfuglien is third among all defenceman with 10 goals and 37 points, but is ranked in the bottom three with a minus-16 rating.Another veteran whose job may be on the line, according to Strange, is New York Rangers forward Brad Richards. Strange said despite the price tag - six years left after this season at $6.67 million per year - the Rangers will decide Richards future based on how many "good years" they believe he has left. Richards will be 40 when his contract expires. Volatile Venture With the post-season now a realistic possibility for the surging Ottawa Senators, general manager Bryan Murray seems ready to make a deal. "We are available to make a deal," he said in a connference call Tuesday.dddddddddddd However, Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun writes that one of the prized names on the market, Buffalo Sabres forward Matt Moulson, may be a little too pricey for the nations capital. Brennan says one NHL executive believes a deal between the Senators and Sabres "makes sense", but another executive said the Sabres would likely ask for too much in the form of "a minimum of a first (round pick) and a top young player. And Im not even sure they even want a first in this draft." Moulson is making $3.13 million this year and is said to be looking for a long-term deal and double his current wage. The Senators likely wont be willing to give up the pieces or dollars for a deal going forward. Faint Twinkle If the Dallas Stars find themselves sinking further and further out of the playoff picture, a veteran sale might be on the way. Mike Heika of the Dallas News said Tuesday that if the Stars remain on the outside looking in at the beginning of February or after the Olympics, then "players like Vern Fiddler, Ray Whitney and Erik Cole will be made available." The Stars dont have to look far into the past as a reference for such moves. Last year the team sent Brendan Morrow to the Pittsburgh Penguins less than two weeks before the trade deadline and traded Jaromir Jagr to the Boston Bruins and Derek Roy to the Vancouver Canucks the day before. Heika says the Stars may also be interested in moving defencemen Trevor Daley or Alex Goligoski. ' ' '

No Jose Bautista, no problem. At least thats the hope for the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night when they host the Chicago White Sox for the second of a four-game series. Bautista has missed four games thanks to a hamstring injury, but the Blue Jays have won three times while scoring 25 runs and compiling a .324 batting average without him. The teams 1-2-3 hitters -- Jose Reyes, Adam Lind and Melky Cabrera -- put together eight hits, four runs batted in and four runs scored in the series opener on Thursday. Bautista could be back for the weekend portion of the series. On the contrary, the Chicago pitching rotation has posted a 5.83 earned run average during an 11-game road stretch in which the White Sox have won just once. R.A. Dickey gets the starting call for the Blue Jays with a chance to end a two-start skid in which hes allowed just five runs in 14 1/3 innings, but had only four runs of offensive support. "I think all but one of my earned runs over my last four or five starts have come on home runs," Dickey said. "Thats tough to overcome." Hes unbeaten in his last seven starts at home, but the White Sox pasted him for seven runs in five innings of a 10-6 Chicago victory when they last met last season. Lefty John Danks goes for the White Sox and faces the Blue Jays for the seventh time. However, hes not met them since May 2011, when he lasted just four innings and gave up nine runs in a 13-4 loss. Danks was a 6-5 loser on Sunday at Minnesota while allowing six runs on 10 hits in five innings. On Thursday, J.A. Happ tossed 7 2/3 scoreless innings as the Blue Jays blanked the White Sox, 7-0. Happ (7-4) struck out eight and scattered four hits while walking two for Toronto. Lind posted three hits and three RBI in the triumph, while Reyes had four hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Scott Carroll (2-4) yielded five runs on nine hits and two walks over five innings for the White Sox. Teppo Numminen Jets Jersey . Super Bowl halftime performers often have collaborators.COLLINGWOOD, ONT. a€“ The Toronto Maple Leafs started this weeks team-bonding trip in cottage country by taking shots at each other, literally. The team took part in a paintball match on Tuesday, which even included head coach Randy Carlyle. And the players did not hesitate to take shots at the man, who controls their ice time. Ia€?d be taking it for sure, said centre Nazem Kadri, when asked what hed do if given a free shot at Carlyle. But I guess, lucky for him, he was on my team. Shoot him? said Joffrey Lupul, who also played for Carlyle in Anaheim. Ia€?ve known him for 10 years. For sure, you get the chance to shoot him you gotta shoot him. Carlyle doesnt blame his players. When youa€?re in that environment, in a small area, I dona€?t really think you have a choice: ita€?s either be shot or shoot at, he said in a matter-of-fact tone. Quite a few of the staff were involved, said captain Dion Phaneuf, so as soon as you get out there, they got camouflage on as well so theya€?re fair game. The Leafs trip will run through Thursday and includes the 29 players remaining in camp. On Wednesday, the group did some CrossFit training in the morning and played a round of golf in the afternoon. But whether all this together time will translate to better play on the ice remains open to debate. Los Angeles Kings coach Darryl Sutter recently told reporters that he doesna€?t think such ventures yield results. Ia€?m not into that, what you hear about: go climbing ropes and going to a fort somewhere, Sutter, who guided L.A. to two Stanley Cup titles in the three seasons, told reporters. You do most of your bonding in May and June, quite honest. If youve got to go somewhere to learn about your personality, you probably have a disorrder, he said.dddddddddddd Carlyle, who led the Anaheim Ducks to a championship in 2007, isna€?t 100 per cent sure that team bonding leads to wins, but he does know one thing. Successful teams usually have united teams, he said. So, is it having success that unites the group or is it the uniting of the group that gives you success? Ita€?s the chicken-before-the-egg theory. But we think that ita€?s imperative that your players have the opportunity to get to know one another both at the rink and away from the rink. Lupul does believe it is important that players relate to each other on a personal level. Well, ita€?s part of it for sure, the Leafs alternate captain explained. Everyone wants to care about their teammates and its good to learn a little bit about a guys background and their family and that stuff you dona€?t get typically coming to the rink and doing your job. Regardless of whether the trip helps the club in the standings or not it is clear that the Leafs are enjoying themselves. The paintball post-mort certainly provided lots of potshots. Dion was active, said Lupul with a grin when asked for his list of standout performers. I dona€?t know if he was good or bad, but he was certainly active and Phil somehow bought a different gun than everyone else so he had a more high-powered semi-automatic weapon whereas we just had regular ones. Dions pretty good, said Kadri. Apparently he plays a fair bit in the summertime. I think Phil was hiding behind a couple guys so I have to say he may have been the worse. Lots of guys stood out, said Phaneuf. I wouldna€?t even want to guess the amount of rounds we went through. There was lots of paint that was used. We werena€?t sparing paint balls, thata€?s for sure. TSN Hockey Insiders Bob McKenzie, Pierre LeBrun and Darren Dreger gathered for the latest installment of Insider Trading and the topics discussed were the suspensions to Coyotes forward Paul Bissonnette and Leafs forward David Clarkson for leaving the bench to get involved in fights, hybrid icing and players who are and arent making a splash in the pre-season. Does Phoenix Coyotes forward Paul Bissonnette have a valid case for appealing his 10-game suspension for leaving the bench to get involved in a fight? Darren Dreger - He may have a case. Its ultimately going to be determined; was it a legal line change vs. an illegal line change? He received the automatic 10-game suspension because it was viewed to be illegal. There is a process in the new CBA that you have to go through. Gary Bettman is the first rung up the ladder of the appeal process and if he doesnt adjust the total, Bissonnette does have another option where he goes to a neutral decision arbitrator and all of this has to happen in the next handful of days before the beginning of the regular season. Will Leafs forward David Clarkson appeal his suspension for the same infraction? Pierre LeBrun - David Clarkson will not appeal his suspension, telling reporters after Tuesdays game that he has decided not to. That is the only decision to be had. He had zero chance and grounds to change the mind of Gary Bettman or a neutral arbitrator that he didnt deserve 10 games. The evidence is clear cut and it took a while for him to get to that decision over the last couple days but he made the right one. Will hybrid icing be in the NHL this season? Darren Dreger - The good news is the NHL and the NHLPA have agreed on the language for hybrid icing which has been finalized. Keep in mind, the Players Association does have to sign off on this, so between the end of this week and Monday, the PA will conduct a full membership vote to see if they have the approval. The concern is, as the defencemen were getting pasted in the old system, well now maybe its reversed because if the forward gains the edge, he might be in jeopardy but its better than what is already in play. Where are we with the possibility of NHL expansion into Seattle? Darren Dreger - The Commissioners office, Gary Bettman and Bill Daly met with Chris Hansen, who is the project manager trying to get that new area built in Seattle. That meeting was on Tuesday and they will continue to monitor, but there is no official push for an expansion any time soon. Who are some players that are and arent making an impression in the NHL pre-season? Bob McKenzie - Dustin Penner is under the gun with the Anaheim Ducks. It would be fair to say they are a little underwhelmed with what he has done so far. They have given him every opportunity to be the left winger on the line with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry but he has not taken advantage. In the pre-season game on Tuesday between the Ducks and the Los Angeles Kings, Penner is getting another chance with the big line but the chances might be running out for him if he doesnt step up his game. Bob McKenzie - Tyler Toffoli, who scored some great goals in the playoffs last year and Linden Vey, who was really good with Manchester, they have played well enough to be on the Kings, but they can be sent to the minors without waivers and right now, there is a body crunch and cap crunch with the Kings. They are trying to move either Keaton Ellerby or Jeff Schultz. They have nine NHL defencemen because of a healthy Willie Mitchell and Matt Greene, so some of those deserving players might get sent down. Bob McKenzie - Jake Allen has been the best goaltender bar none, better than Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott for the St. Louis Blues but hes quite likely going to get demoted because he can be sent down. Halak and Elliott looks like the one-two punch to start the season for the Blues. Pierre LeBrun - Valeri Nichushkin is a dark horse for the Calder Trophy and he has absolutely dazzled in Dallas with two goals on nine shots in his first pre-season game for the Stars. Sergei Gonchar is from the same hometown in Russia and has been a great influence. He was rated top three by the Stars on their draft list and a lot of people were scared to draft him because of the possibility of playing in the KHL, but they were lucky to get him at number 10. Darren Dreger - Tim Thomas could play for the Florida Panthers as early as Thursday. Hes been really good in training camp. Pierre LeBrun - Jose Theodore has an offer to play in the KHL. He isnt sure hes going to take it at this point but there is interest. PITTSBURGH -- Since Jerome Bettis retired after the 2005 NFL season, the Pittsburgh Steelers have searched for a big, bruising running back in his mould. The list of hopefuls has been long, if not particularly distinguished. Verron Haynes, Najee Davenport, Carey Davis, Gary Russell, Frank Summers, Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman all failed to consistently provide production in short-yardage and goal line situations. Enter LeGarrette Blount. The 6-foot, 250-pound veteran certainly looks the part. And while he has a long way to go to be mentioned with the likes of Bettis, there have been plenty of flashes during his four seasons in the league. Blount averaged 5.0 yards per carry while splitting time with Stevan Ridley in New England last season, and gashed the Indianapolis Colts for 166 yards and four touchdowns in the playoffs. Though second-year back LeVeon Bell remains the starter, Blount is confident he can make an impact no matter what situation. "I know they brought me in here to run the football, so I hope there are plenty of carries to go around," Blount said Wednesday. "I know that LeVeon is going to get his fair share, so I hope theres enough for all of us." Bell, last years second-round pick, missed the opening three games while recovering from a preseason foot injury. But he still played nearly 700 snaps, a heavy workload the 6-foot-1, 230-pound Bell managed with ease. Still, the Steelers will find opportunities to go from the patient and pragmatic Bell to the bruising Blount, with the emphasis on bruising. "Thats my running style," Blount said. "Thats how I run the football, and I feel like (Bell) is also a big, tough running back, too. So, thats just how this team is built, with a physical running game, and I think thats what theyre trying to get back to. So, hopefully, we can do that." Blount noted a balannced offence is needed to make a run to the Super Bowl such as the ones by Seattle and Denver last year.dddddddddddd The champion Seahawks had Marshawn Lynch running the ball and Russell Wilson throwing it, while the Broncos ran the ball with Knowshon Moreno when Peyton Manning wasnt breaking NFL passing records. "I think its huge for us to (sign Blount), because Ive always said that we need to be a balanced offence," quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said. "So, we need to run the ball. We need to be great at running the ball, and weve got guys that want to be great at running the ball. So, hopefully, we can do it and do it successfully." Blount added that while his body type and size make him an ideal power back, he has a variety of skill sets, such as catching the football and running away from defenders in the open field. But he certainly has proven he can run over them as well. Those attributes, combined with Bells slashing style, should give the Steelers a solid one-two punch. "I think we have a really good mix of running backs," Blount said. "(But) Ive seen the NFL Network, and they have these top 10 or top five running back duos in the NFL. I noticed that were not one of them, and I dont like it. In all honesty, I believe theyre downgrading the skill level that we have in our backfield. . I think thats kind of disrespectful." Does that mean Blount and Bell have something to prove? "Were not going to go out here and go on about how were not in that group," Blount said. "But were going to go out there and show that we belong there with our performance." NOTES: RB Dri Archer has missed the opening two OTAs, just like linebacker Jordan Zumwalt from UCLA, because his school is on the quarters system and their class has not yet graduated. . WASHINGTON -- Milwaukee starter Kyle Lohse didnt need many words to sum up his effort in Friday nights 4-2 win at Washington. "It was survival," he said. Lohse limited the Nationals to one run over seven innings despite giving up 10 hits and allowing at least one base runner in every inning. "I think it was five out of seven innings that got led off with a hit. I was thinking about starting off innings out of the stretch, but I didnt want to let everybody know I was aware of it," Lohse joked. Scooter Gennett and Khris Davis homered to help the Brewers take the series opener between division leaders. Aramis Ramirez added a two-run single for the NL Central leading Brewers. Lohse (10-4) picked up his first win since June 22 as Washington went 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position. "Thats being able to make pitches and battle when youre not completely on your game," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. Lohse threw 103 pitches. He struck out three without a walk Milwaukee shortstop Jean Segura was back in the lineup, a week after the death of his 9-month-old son, and went 1 for 4. He received a warm ovation from the Nationals Park crowd prior to his first at-bat. "It was amazing, you know, it was amazing," Segura said of the acknowledgement. "When a player has that experience, (is in) that position, its tough. They know how difficult this game is and how hard we go out there and compete" Bryce Harper, struggling since returning from a left thumb injury had a homer and two singles for Washington, which began play percentage points ahead of Atlanta in the NL East. "I think hes stood up just a touch more to get on top of the baseball. Lowered his hands a little bit, probably a little more direct to the ball. He worked on that over the break," manager Matt Williams said. "He looked good up there tonight." Francisco Rodriguez gave up Harpers ninth-inning homer, but picked up his 28th save. Stephen Strasburg (7-7) allowed four runs on seven hits. He struck out nine in seven innings. Washington had won 10 of 14 coming in while the Brewers had dropped 11 of 13, but it was Milwaukee that started fast. The Brewers got solo homers from Gennett in the first inning and Davis in the second. In the fourth, Strasburg issued a two-out walk to Gennett and Ryan Braun doubled him to third. Ramirez then blooped a single, scoring both runners to make it 4-0. "I got in off Ramirezs hands hard and he just dumped it out there in right," Strasburg said. "That was the one that was really frustrating." Strasburg, who allowed seven runs in 4 2-3 innings June 25 in Milwaukee, had given up just five earned runs in 20 1-3 innings in his three starts since. The Nationals pulled to within 4-1 on Ian Desmonds RBI double. An obstruction call briefly delayed the first inning. After Denard Span led off with a single, Anthony Rendon followed with a grounder to shortstop. Span beat the throw to second and was initially called safe, and second baseman Gennetts relay throw got Rendon at first. However, second base umpire Angel Campos called Span out for obstruction as Span came up into Gennett after his slide. Williams argued and the umpires huddled. Span remained out but Rendon was ruled safe at first because Spans obstruction created a dead-ball situation. "I think they got it wrong, but I cant tell you the ruling on it because Ive never seen it before," Roenicke said. "(Crew Chief Bill Miller) said once the umpire calls him safe and then calls the interference it becomes a dead ball." The rest will stay for the record, for the good memory to tell my grandkids when I will be home in front of the fireplace, I will tell the story.Vogel jokingly said Messina should toss aside all of the coaching strategies Popovich has used in leading the Spurs to five NBA championships.Thats what I would do, he said. Pops stuff is terrible, it doesnt really work. So, honestly, I would go away from that, especially for tonights game. ' ' '
